One of the more popular types of apps for kids is the digital storybook. These are apps that make a book come alive by offering the ability to interact with the story.
I had the opportunity to review Friends are Fun!, an iPad app for younger children that teaches how to make friends and how to be a good friend. The app is geared towards ages 2-8. The story is clear and simple. I like that you can choose to have the app read the story out loud, or you can choose to read the story to your child. An older child just learning to read can try reading on their own, too.
Once you start the story, the character “Peace Boy” can choose three different friends. So, even after reading through the story once, kids will want to start over and try the other new friends.
Kids can interact with the story by touching the colorful background and characters for sound effects, exploring the different characters and animals. I’ll note that this fact wasn’t clear to me (or my 11-year old app testers!) the first time through, and it was not mentioned on the information page, so if they make an updated version I’d recommend adding this explanation on the Help/Info page.
The graphics are bright and colorful on the HD version which is available for newer model iPads (I used an iPad 2). There is also a non-HD version available for iPod touch, iPhone, and older model iPads, and an Android version.
I think younger kids especially will enjoy the story and have fun exploring the characters and sounds. I’d recommend this app for the toddler-preschool set as a fun addition to a digital storybook library.
