How to Change Your Email Signature on iPhone and iPad

Change or remove the "Sent from my iPhone" email signature in the Mail app, set different signatures per account, and update it in Gmail and Outlook apps too.

Every iPhone and iPad comes with a default signature at the bottom of every email you send from the Mail app: "Sent from my iPhone" or "Sent from my iPad." Some people like it because it explains short replies and typos. Others would rather replace it with their name, a title or nothing at all.

Changing it takes about a minute. Here is how to do it in Apple Mail and in the other email apps families commonly use.

How to change your signature in the Mail app

On current versions of iOS and iPadOS, Mail's settings live inside the Apps section of Settings.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Scroll down and tap Apps.
  3. Tap Mail. (You can also use the search bar at the top of the Apps list.)
  4. Scroll to the Composing section and tap Signature.
  5. Tap in the text box and type your new signature, or delete the existing text.
  6. Tap the back arrow. Your change saves automatically.

The next email you write in Mail will use the new signature.

Using a different signature for each account

If you have more than one email account in Mail, such as a personal Gmail and a work address, you can give each its own signature.

  1. Go to Settings > Apps > Mail > Signature.
  2. Tap Per Account.
  3. Type a separate signature under each account name.

If you choose All Accounts, the same signature is used everywhere.

Removing the signature completely

To send email with no signature at all, go to the Signature screen and delete all the text. Leave the box empty.

What can go in an iPhone signature?

Apple's Mail app on iPhone and iPad only supports text signatures. You can include:

  • Your name
  • A phone number
  • A short title or role
  • A line of text such as "Please excuse brevity, sent from my phone"

You can apply basic formatting, like bold or italics, by selecting text in the signature box and using the formatting options that appear. Images and logos are not supported in the Mail app's signature settings. If you need a branded signature with a logo, set it up through your email provider's own app or on a computer.

Changing the signature in other email apps

Many people use the Gmail or Outlook app on their iPhone instead of Apple Mail. Each has its own signature setting, separate from the one above.

Gmail app

  1. Open the Gmail app.
  2. Tap the menu icon (three lines) and choose Settings.
  3. Select the account you want to change.
  4. Tap Signature settings and turn on Mobile Signature.
  5. Type your signature.

Gmail's mobile signature is separate from any signature you set on gmail.com in a web browser.

Outlook app

  1. Open the Outlook app.
  2. Tap your profile picture or the menu, then tap Settings (the gear icon).
  3. Tap Signature under your mail settings.
  4. Edit or replace the default "Get Outlook for iOS" text.

Menu labels in third-party apps change from time to time, so if you do not see these exact words, look for Signature inside the app's settings.

A privacy note for families

Email signatures are seen by everyone you email, including people you do not know well. Before you add personal details, consider:

  • Skip your home address. There is rarely a good reason to send it to everyone automatically.
  • Think twice about your mobile number if you email a lot of businesses or strangers.
  • Check your kids' signatures. If your child has an email account on their own device, make sure their signature does not include their full name, school, age or phone number. A first name, or nothing, is plenty.

These small details add up. Our guide to protecting your privacy online covers other ways personal information leaks without anyone meaning to share it.

Setting up a signature on a child's device

If your child has their own email account on an iPhone or iPad, take a minute to set up their signature together. It's a small, practical way to start a conversation about what's appropriate to share with people they email, such as teachers, coaches or club organizers.

  1. On your child's device, go to Settings > Apps > Mail > Signature.
  2. Delete "Sent from my iPhone" or "Sent from my iPad."
  3. Type a simple sign-off, such as their first name.
  4. Explain why you're leaving out details like their school, age and phone number.

If your child uses a school-issued account in Gmail or Outlook, the school may control the signature, so check before changing it.

Signature ideas

A few simple options, depending on how you use email:

  • Minimal: your first name
  • Personal: your full name and nothing else
  • Volunteer or PTA: your name, role and the group's email address
  • Work from phone: your name, title, and "Sent from mobile, please excuse typos"

Troubleshooting

If your new signature is not showing up:

  1. Check which app you are sending from. The Mail signature only applies to Apple Mail, not Gmail, Outlook or other apps.
  2. Check the account. If you set signatures per account, make sure you edited the right one.
  3. Look at replies. Mail adds your signature to replies and forwards as well, above the quoted message.
  4. Restart the Mail app if an old signature keeps appearing.

Quick recap

  • Apple Mail: Settings > Apps > Mail > Signature.
  • Tap Per Account for different signatures per email address.
  • Delete the text to remove the signature completely.
  • Gmail and Outlook have their own signature settings inside each app.
  • Keep personal details like your address out of signatures, and check your kids' too.
